millennial woman has revealed how a seemingly inconspicuous blemish on her nose turned out to be far more than a pimple, and it led to a lifechanging diagnosis. When Jackie Bowker, 34, first spotted the mark on her nose in early 2025, she presumed it was just an ordinary pimple. But rather than clearing up after a few days, the blemish remained and didn\u2019t show signs of going down.<\/p>\n
Bowker, who resides in Brisbane, Australia, noticed that the mark was still on her nose after six months, telling Newsweek that it \u201cjust wouldn\u2019t clear up.\u201d She knew then it couldn\u2019t be a normal pimple and decided to do some research to get answers. A Google search revealed that the mark could in fact be basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which was a terrifying thought. Fortunately, Bowker had her annual skin check scheduled with the doctor on August 2, 2025.<\/p>\n
She mentioned the mark to her specialist, who also agreed that it looked concerning. \u201cI wasn\u2019t at all surprised because of the Google search I\u2019d done,\u201d Bowker said. \u201cBut I was scared in the moment because, even though I knew it was highly likely to be a BCC, heading into that appointment and having the doctor confirm it looked like a BCC (that would need to be sent away for a biopsy) was quite worrying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bowker had the biopsy done during the appointment and had to wait a week for the results.<\/p>\n
Just days later, it was confirmed that the blemish on her nose was indeed BCC, a type of skin cancer. The Mayo Clinic explains that BCC begins in the skin cells (basal cells) and is usually caused by exposure to sunlight. \u201cI had a few tears.<\/p>\n
Even though it\u2019s a BCC (not a melanoma, thankfully), it\u2019s still frightening to hear you\u2019re now a skin cancer statistic. I couldn\u2019t believe it happened to me when I take such great care of my skin,\u201d Bowker continued. What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?<\/p>\n
BCC will often appear as a transparent bump on the skin, or it may show up as a brown, black or blue lesion. It will usually occur on parts of the body that are often exposed to sun, particularly the head and neck. In Bowker\u2019s case, the mark was \u201cpretty inconspicuous\u201d and easy to overlook.<\/p>\n
Bowker shared a video on TikTok (@on.academy) showing just how small the mark was which proved to be lifechanging. During the clip, she asks people to try and find it on her face before eventually pointing it out at the end. The video has gone viral with over 1.8 million views and more than 58,900 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.<\/p>\n
Bowker hopes the video will show just how unassuming skin cancer can be, as she hopes this serves as a reminder for people to get their skin checked regularly. Once Bowker was referred to a dermatologist, she was able to get the skin cancer removed through a Mohs surgery. It\u2019s a precise outpatient procedure that involves removing thin layers of skin that contain cancerous cells and immediately examining them to ensure clear margins.<\/p>\n
Following her first procedure, results showed that they didn\u2019t remove all the cancer, so Bowker had to go in for a second Mohs surgery immediately after. The entire process took around three hours and only required local anesthetic. Why It Matters
\nWhile Bowker always looks after her skin and thought she did enough, this experience has shown the damaging effects of long-term sun exposure.<\/p>\n
BCCs don\u2019t solely develop from sunburns, as the Mayo Clinic highlights that chronic sun exposure increases a person\u2019s risk. Precautions can be taken to reduce the risk of skin cancer, including protective clothing, wearing sunscreen year-round, staying out of the sun during peak times, and not using tanning beds. \u201cIt\u2019s been crazy to see just how many people are going through the same thing,\u201d Bowker told Newsweek.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo many people have reached out and said they went through (or are going through) something similar. It\u2019s been really nice to connect with those people and share stories. \u201cGet your skin checked and please be vigilant with your skin.<\/p>\n
Look out for changes, take photos of new spots or moles. Keep those photos in a separate album on your phone so you can come back to them every couple of months and see if the spot has changed or hasn\u2019t disappeared.
